The Wizard Of Oz
The Wizard of Oz was Starlight’s first musical to incorporate the stage school and over 160 children appeared onstage over the course of six shows during August 2004. Being a children’s favourite it was an obvious choice for the group with performers as young as five taking part in the show. After three days of auditions the leading role of Dorothy was given to 12 year old Eve Brennan who went on to play the role excellently.
Everyone knows the story of Dorothy from Kansas who’s house gets blown off over the rainbow in a twister and lands on a witch in Munchkinland. On her arrival in Oz she meets up with Scarecrow, Tin man and Lion on her journey to the city of Oz to find a Wizard to help her to get home. The three become great friends and eventually kill the wicked witch setting all of the Munchkins and the good people of Oz free. Songs in the show include Follow the Yellow Brick Road, Merry Old Land Of Oz, If I Only Had A Brain Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead and of course the academy award winning Over The Rainbow.
Starlight staged this show at Kilkenny’s Watergate Theatre in August 2004 and subsequently went on to stage the show at the Dunamaise Arts Centre in Portlaoise in August 2005 with the Co.Laois Starlight Stage School classes taking part. The show was Directed by Jason Paul Ryan, Assisted By Sharon Molloy with Choreography from Michele Wise. The set was designed and built by Noel Hickey and Peter Mulhall with costumes from Actors Garb.
