Annie Jr

Annie Jr was Starlight’s 2005 musical at the Watergate Theatre running from Wednesday 2nd to Friday 4th of November. The show was directed by Jason Paul Ryan, choreographed by Michele Wise and Sharon Molloy was assistant director. This was the groups first “Jr” show and it included only students from the stage school, therefore all the cast and chorus members members were under 14. This made history as the first full musical in Kilkenny to be performed only by children.

Annie of course is a story that everyone knows well after the success of the film version. Famous songs executed brilliantly by the Starlight cast included ‘Its A Hard Knock Life’, ‘Maybe’, ‘Easy Street’, ‘NYC’, and of course the theme song of the show ‘Tomorrow’. Hazel Tully fought off the competition from dozens of girls who had a genuine chance of playing the title role and she was superb. Shona Lanigan was also outstanding as the permanently drunk Ms Hannigan in her scenes with the orphans who sang and danced their little hearst out with fabulous energy.

The show was such a success at the Watergate that Starlight decided to re run the show in Castlecomer Community Hall for two nights. This was then postponed until June 2006. The show featured some new faces in the re run as some of the cast members had other commitments at this time but once again the energy and enthusiasm from the cast was wonderful. The fantastic set was designed by Andrew Small and constructed by Tommy Sweeney with Lighting from Gerry Taylor.
